“Throughout the appeal process, Jordan has been subject to consistent, utterly baseless, and extremely hurtful attacks on social media. We condemn the attacks and those who engage in or support them. Later on Saturday, the FIG announced that Chiles’ original score of 13.666 was reinstated. Bumping her back down to fifth place, while Barbosu reclaimed the bronze with a score of 13.766. The announcement did not clarify the status of Chiles’ medal, leaving her Olympic future uncertain.

Chiles took to Instagram on Saturday to share her emotional response to the ruling. She posted a series of stories, including one with broken heart emojis and another announcing her decision to step away from social media.
Chiles’ teammate, Suni Lee, also voiced her frustration with the judges’ error in her own Instagram stories. “All this talk about the athlete, what about the judges? Completely unacceptable. “I got your back forever, Joe. You have all my flowers, and you will always be an Olympic champion.”

She would become only the third gymnast in history to have an Olympic medal taken away. The other two instances involve China’s Dong Fangxiao and Romania’s Andreea Răducan, both of whom lost their medals from the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She tested positive for a banned substance found in cold medicine given to her by a team doctor. China’s team all-around bronze was revoked. Two years below the minimum age required for competition.
