Although Gauff is a huge fan of James, she has never had the chance to meet him formally. Serving as flag bearers together offers “a cool circumstance to meet him,” she added.
Gauff’s Olympic Debut and Team USA
At 20 years old Gauff, who is currently ranked No. 2 in the world, will make her Olympic debut in Paris. She missed the Tokyo Games due to testing positive for COVID-19. Gauff will be joined by a formidable Team USA lineup that includes No. 5 Jessica Pegula. Danielle Collins, and Emma Navarro in women’s singles, as well as Taylor Fritz. Tommy Paul, Chris Eubanks, and Marcos Giron in men’s singles.
Medal Contender
Gauff is a favorite to bring home a medal on the clay courts at Roland-Garros, the site of the French Open. She is the reigning U.S. Open champion and reached the semifinals at the year’s first two Grand Slams, the Australian and French Opens. She was also a finalist in the Roland-Garros Clay in 2022. And is expected to be a strong medal contender in doubles as well.
